Welcome to the latest edition of the SVBS newsletter.

This week, we're focusing on free energy assessments for South and Vale businesses, carried out by Low Carbon Hub. A launch webinar will be held on Thursday 12 September to help you decide if an energy assessment is right for your business. Full details can be found below.

We're also promoting free green skills courses at Abingdon & Witney College, OxLEP and SOFEA's 'No Limits' Programme, the national 'Ask for Angela' scheme, the Community Fund and ALP Synergy's 'My SME Business Carbon Calculation' event.

There are lots more opportunities, events and resources to get stuck into this week, but as always, if you'd like to suggest content for the SVBS newsletter, please get in touch with us.

- South and Vale's Economic Development team
We've awarded UKSPF funding to Low Carbon Hub to provide 22 businesses in South and Vale with a free energy assessment at their site, and a bespoke decarbonisation plan.

The surveys will be carried out by experienced experts who will review site and energy data, and provide recommendations across a wide range of topics, including insulation, lighting, renewables and electric vehicle chargers.

All participating organisations will receive bespoke recommendations for their premises, each with a rationale and steps for implementation, supported with informed estimates of costs and savings. The report will also include details on suitable finance options to achieve these goals.

Upon receiving an energy assessment and a decarbonisation plan, on average, organisations can cut their energy bills by 19%.

Get involved in the 'No Limits' programme

The councils have contributed funding to OxLEP and SOFEA’s ‘No Limits’ programme, designed to offer support for residents into green skills training and employment.

The programme includes assistance for those who need help to get a job, including free laptops and mobile phones to develop digital skills, as well as travel grants for those needing financial help to get to work, school or college.

If this is of interest, please contact Taraji@sofea.uk.com.
Could your staff support someone who is feeling unsafe?

If you run a licensed venue, such as a pub, restaurant or café, please consider signing up to ‘Ask for Angela’, the national scheme aimed at ensuring help is available for those who are feeling unsafe or receiving unwanted attention.

If someone needs help while in a registered ‘Ask for Angela’ venue, they just need to ask any member of staff “Is Angela in?”. Staff are trained to recognise the request and to offer the appropriate support, such as keeping an eye on the individual, calling a friend, relative, taxi or the police - or helping them to leave the building via an alternative exit.

When signing up, you will be provided with guidance for staff and downloadable ‘Ask for Angela’ posters to help inform both staff and customers.

If you are interested in becoming an ‘Ask for Angela’ venue, please email the South and Vale Community Safety team at communitysafety@southandvale.gov.uk, or for more information, visit the national Ask for Angela website.
Community Fund: Apply for crime prevention funding

The second round of the Community Fund is now open, with £200,000 of grant funding available for community and voluntary organisations.

The Community Fund helps to prevent crime and keep communities safe. Money for the scheme is created from the proceeds from the sale of items seized from criminals that cannot be returned to their rightful owners.

Organisations from across the Thames Valley can apply for grants for projects that support one of the PCC’s Police and Crime Plan priorities:

  • Protecting Communities (including anti-social behaviour and road safety)
  • Protecting People (including domestic abuse and the night-time economy)
  • Protecting Property (including cybercrime and fraud and retail crime)
The fund closes for applications at 12pm on Monday 9 September.

Apply via the Community Fund webpage.
My SME Business Carbon Calculation

We've awarded UKSPF funding to ALP Synergy Ltd to carry out a Decarbonisation Business Support pilot programme, helping South and Vale businesses to lower their greenhouse gas emissions.

The programme is free for South and Vale businesses, and consists of Net Zero webinars and workshops. Each person who attends will receive a carbon reduction plan, providing them with a set of specific actions they can take to start or progress their sustainability journey. Tailored 1:1 support to explore new processes or technologies will also be provided.

The next webinar in the series is 'My SME Business Carbon Calculation', introducing businesses to the SME Climate Hub calculator. During this session, businesses will learn how to improve their carbon footprint.

Friday 30 August   |   9am - 10am

Attendees will come away from the session with an understanding of how to complete a typical carbon calculation for their business, and will know how to access more help with carbon reduction activities.

To register for your free place and to view all webinars in this programme, visit ALP Synergy's Eventbrite page.
